Will they ever make a sequel to Casablanca?

- - - -

Casablanca is a tremendously famous movie with an open ending which leaves the romantic leads alive but separated. Casablanca II is an obvious idea. So Casablanca II is an inevitability. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. But soon. And for the rest of your life.

Within the next 35 years, unless Time Warner successfully lobbies Congress for further extensions of copyright, Casablanca should enter the public domain. Most likely, a few years before that happens, Time Warner will make a sequel on the grounds that someone will and it might as well be them while they hold the rights. If not, of course, someone else will make Casablanca II shortly afterward. It may not be a high-budget theatrical release, it may not be a blockbuster hit, but at the right budget (made for television?) it could certainly be commercially successful. So someone will do it.

Note that Gone with the Wind is almost perfectly analogous, and someone made a sequel to that.
